Colossians

This portion of Al-Kitab takes its name from people to whom it was originally written–followers of ‘Isa al-Masih who lived in the city of Colossae. Colossae was located in Asia Minor, part of what is now called Turkey. The apostle Paul (pbuh) wrote this letter, even though he had never been to Colossae nor met the believers there. He writes to encourage them in their faith. False teachers had entered the congregation and were introducing many strange ideas. They were teaching the believers to worship angels, not eat certain foods, and be circumcised just as Jews were. Paul (pbuh) wrote to say that for forgiveness of sins, none of these things are important because the salvation Allah provided is complete. He also says that anyone who depends on those things has departed from true faith in ‘Isa al-Masih. This letter and the letter to the Ephesians were written at about the same time and have similar content. However, Ephesians is addressed to people who are mature followers of ‘Isa al-Masih. The Colossians however, were relatively new believers.
