This portion of Al-Kitab takes its name from its author, Prophet Nahum. He was a Hebrew prophet who prophesied concerning the capital city of Assyria, Nineveh. Even though God Almighty had chosen to use the Assyrians to punish Bani-Israel for their sins, the Assyrians had become worthy of judgment themselves because of their misuse of power. Prophet Nahum’s message of judgment on Assyria and his news of the restoration of the Jews, gave the Jews comfort and encouragement. From the scripture of Prophet Yunus we learn about the repentance of the people of Nineveh and the Lord’s delay in punishing them. From the scripture of Prophet Nahum we learn that the people of Nineveh returned to their former evil ways and so God finally punished them. The obedience of one generation does not guarantee that the next generation will be obedient. Everyone should take warning from the case of Nineveh.
