I saw another great and marvelous sign in the sky: seven angels having the seven last plagues, for in them the wrath of God1 is finished.
2I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who overcame the beast, his image, and the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having harps of God. 3They sang the song of Musa2, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,
“Great and marvelous are your works, LORD God All-Powerful.3 Righteous and true are your ways, King of the nations. 4Who would not fear you, Lord, and glorify your Name? For you alone are holy. For all the nations will come and worship before you.4 For your righteous acts have been revealed.”
5After these things I looked, and the Temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened. 6The seven angels who had the seven plagues came out, clothed with pure, bright linen, and wearing golden sashes around their breasts.
7One of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God, who lives forever and ever. 8The Temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power. No one was able to enter into the Temple, until the seven plagues of the seven angels would be finished.
- 15:1 God, English translation of theos. It is the Greek equivalent of elohim and eloah (Hebrew) which are related to allah (Arabic) and alaha (Syriac), all of which translate as “God,” and refer to the one true God. ↩︎
- 15:3 Musa, this Arabic name is derived from the Hebrew name Moses meaning “to pull out” or “draw out” (of water); referring to the biblical story where he was rescued from the Nile River by Firaun’s daughter. ↩︎
- 15:3 LORD God All-Powerful, this combination mirrors the Septuagint’s* way of translating the Hebrew word combination, YAHWEH elohim sabaoth, into Greek. LORD in all caps represents God’s personal name YAHWEH in the Hebrew scriptures. An example of this combination is Hosea 12:5, which says: “Even YAHWEH God All-Powerful; YAHWEH is the Name by which he is to be remembered!”
*Septuagint is the name of an ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures used by early Christians. ↩︎ - 15:4 Similar wording to Zabur 86:9 which says: “All nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord. They shall glorify your Name.” ↩︎
