In the year that king Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two he covered his face. With two he covered his feet. With two he flew. 3One called to another, and said,
“Holy, holy, holy, is YAHWEH1 All-Powerful!
The whole earth is full of his glory!”
4The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5Then I said, “Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, YAHWEH All-Powerful!”
6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar. 7He touched my mouth with it, and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin forgiven.”
8I heard the Lord’s voice, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”
Then I said, “Here I am. Send me!“
9He said, “Go, and tell this people,
‘You will be ever hearing,
But never understanding;
You will be ever seeing,
But never perceiving.’
10Make the heart of this people calloused;
Make their ears dull, and close their eyes;
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart,
And turn, and be healed.”2
11Then I said, “Lord, how long?”
He answered,
“Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant,
And the houses without a man,
And the land becomes utterly desolate,
12And YAHWEH has removed men far away,
And the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13If there are yet a tenth in it,
It also shall in turn be eaten up:
As a terebinth, or as an oak, whose stump remains, when it is cut down;
So the holy seed is its stump.”
- 6:3 YAHWEH, the name God revealed to Prophet Musa in the Taurat, Exodus 3:15 – God said moreover to Musa, “You shall tell Bani-Israel this, ‘YAHWEH, the God of your fathers, the God of Ibrahim, the God of Ishaq, and the God of Yaqub, has sent me to you.’ This is my Name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered to all generations.” ↩︎
- 6:9-10 Quoted by the Apostle Paul in the Injil, Acts 28:26-27, speaking to Jewish people in Rome who heard the message about ‘ISA AL-MASIH for the first time. Acts 28:23-28 says: When they had appointed him a day, many people came to him at his lodging. He explained to them, testifying about the Kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning ‘ISA, both from the Taurat of Musa and from the Prophets, from morning until evening. Some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. When they didn’t agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one word, “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Shaya, the prophet, to our fathers, saying, ‘Go, and tell this people, You will be ever hearing, But never understanding; You will be ever seeing, But never perceiving. For this people’s heart has grown callous, Their ears are dull of hearing, They have closed their eyes; Otherwise they might see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And turn, and I would heal them.’ Be it known therefore to you, that the salvation of God is sent to the nations. They will also listen.”
Quoted also by ‘ISA AL-MASIH in the Injil, Matthew 13:14-15. He was speaking to his disciples about why he spoke in parables (stories) to the crowds without explanation in Matthew 13:13-16, in which ‘ISA says: “Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing, they do not hear, neither do they understand. In them the prophecy of Shaya is fulfilled, which says, ‘You will be ever hearing, But never understanding; You will be ever seeing, But never perceiving. For this people’s heart has grown callous, Their ears are dull of hearing, They have closed their eyes; Otherwise they might see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And turn, and I would heal them.’ But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.”
Partial quotes are also given elsewhere in the Injil, in Mark 4:12, Luke 8:10 and John 12:40. ↩︎
